Where to from here?

Pelham House and Cottage have been an incredible few years and we think we are ready to step up to the next challenge. After spending a few years in the Blackall Range in the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland though, it’s hard to imagine going back to the hustle and bustle of the city or even the metropolitan coastal centres.

We have found a great little rural residential block in Pomona in the Noosa Hinterland and we are looking for some homes with good shape and bones to move. If this sounds like your neighbour’s paddock or a place you’ve been thinking of selling quietly, here’s the short version of what we’re after.

  • Where and when?

    Where: Within 400km radius of Pomona, QLD (4568) as we have a level pad on a new block of land and anything over that is kinda cost prohibitive to move.

    When: We are ready to get started ASAP

  • What?

    Home: 2-3BR character home to be high-set and built under ~100m2

    Guesthouse: 2BR cottage/cabin <= 65m2

  • Budget

    Home: $300k (moved, re-stumped, ready to move in)

    Guesthouse: $100k (moved, re-stumped, ready to move in)


The dream result

  • Character

    Like all ambitious house-hunters, would be great to. have some character ie Queenslander, Colonial, Farmhouse vibe with a dash of architectural flair. Post-War style can still hit the mark but ideally some unique character traits.

  • Condition / wear

    We learned a lot with our last home, but we’ve still got two left-handed hammers and callous-less hands so if beggars were choosers:

    - Minimal/no internal (ceiling/wall/floor) asbestos or black mould

    - Electrically re-wired and/or renovated within the current century

  • 2-for-1

    Last time, our amazing house movers BTHR helped us move the house and the garage which we converted into a cottage. That was a dash small, but we are open to creative ways to keep relocation cost/overhead down and trying to move two homes in the one go seems like maybe it could help?

  • 1.6ha block with existing house pad

  • Current house pad was for car storage under a highset home, old stumps cut off at ground level by previous owners who demolished the home. Goal is to put a house on existing house pad.

    • Seeking 2-3BR high-set character home to put on house pad

  • Guesthouse/cabin aiming to be on western (left) portion of the block. Under 65m2 gives flexibility within zoning code to be self contained secondary dwelling if needed.

    • Seeking 2BR low-set cabin/cottage/quarters

How this might work for the homeowner?

Conventional approaches we are trying

  • Trawling the sites of the Mega List of House Removers and visiting their websites constantly and annoying them with follow-ups

  • Facebook marketplace and Gumtree alerts

  • Calling Realtors to ask if they know of any home-owners that may be ready to do a big knock-down-rebuild and are looking for house recyclers.

Un-conventional approaches we are tryng

  • Scraping development/planning sites to find houses due for demolition to contact the owners

  • Searching the QLD Government Gazettes for Notice of Intent to Resume to find homes that may be being moved for infrastructure/road projects by State/Federal Governments
